Grounding gives electricity a safe path to follow if something goes wrong. It's the reason many outlets have three prongs, and it's a quiet but critical layer of protection against shock and fire.
What grounding actually does
In a properly grounded system, if a fault causes electricity to stray from its intended path — say, a wire comes loose inside an appliance — the grounding path safely carries that current away to the earth instead of through you. It also helps circuit breakers and safety switches trip quickly when there's a problem.
The third prong on a plug
That third, rounded prong on a plug is the ground connection. It links the metal parts of an appliance to your home's grounding system, so if a fault energizes the housing, the current has somewhere safe to go. This is why you should never break off the third prong or use a 'cheater' adapter to force a three-prong plug into a two-prong outlet — doing so removes your protection.
Older homes and two-prong outlets
Many older homes have two-prong (ungrounded) outlets. These predate modern grounding requirements and don't offer the same protection. A licensed electrician can evaluate your wiring and recommend options — which may include proper grounding or GFCI protection where appropriate.
