Modern homes rely on safety switches that quietly guard against shock and fire. Understanding GFCIs and AFCIs helps you know whether your home is properly protected.
Electrical safety switches are devices that automatically cut power when they detect a dangerous condition. The two most important types in a home are GFCIs and AFCIs. Here's what each does and where it belongs.
GFCI — protection from shock
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) monitors the flow of electricity and cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects a ground fault — the kind that can cause a dangerous shock. GFCIs are why you can safely have outlets near water.
GFCI protection is required in areas where water is present:
- Kitchens (near sinks and countertops)
- Bathrooms
- Laundry rooms
- Garages and unfinished basements
- Outdoor outlets
- Near pools and hot tubs
GFCIs come as special outlets (with Test/Reset buttons) or as breakers in your panel. If your older home lacks GFCI protection in these areas, adding it is an important and affordable safety upgrade.
AFCI — protection from fire
An arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) guards against a different danger: electrical arcing. Arcing happens when electricity jumps across a gap — due to damaged wiring, loose connections, or a pinched cord — and it's a common cause of electrical fires. AFCIs detect these dangerous arcs and cut power before a fire can start.
AFCI protection is required in many living areas of newer homes — bedrooms, living rooms, and similar spaces. Older homes often don't have it, and adding AFCI protection is a meaningful fire-safety improvement.
Dual protection: Combination devices that provide both GFCI and AFCI protection are available and are often used to meet modern code in one component.
How to test your safety switches
GFCI and AFCI devices have Test and Reset buttons. Pressing Test should cut the power; Reset restores it. It's worth testing them periodically — if a device doesn't trip when tested or won't reset, it may be faulty and should be replaced by a licensed electrician.
