Outlets are the most-touched part of your electrical system, which makes outlet safety one of the simplest and most important things you can get right at home.
Every outlet in your home is a connection point to your electrical system. Most are perfectly safe, but damaged, overloaded, or unprotected outlets can pose a shock or fire risk — especially in homes with children. Here's how to keep them safe.
Warning signs of an unsafe outlet
- Warmth or discoloration around the outlet or plate
- Scorch marks or a burning smell
- Sparking when you plug or unplug something
- Plugs that fall out or fit loosely
- Outlets that don't work or work intermittently
- A buzzing or crackling sound
Childproofing outlets
If you have young children, unused outlets are worth protecting. There are a few options:
- Safety plugs / outlet caps: inexpensive inserts that block access to unused outlets
- Sliding outlet covers: plates that automatically close off the openings when a plug is removed
- Tamper-resistant receptacles (TRRs): outlets with built-in shutters that only open when a plug is inserted evenly — now standard in new construction and the most reliable option
Of these, tamper-resistant receptacles offer the best protection because there's nothing for a child to remove. A licensed electrician can replace standard outlets with tamper-resistant ones throughout your home.
GFCI protection in wet areas
Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets protect against shock by cutting power the instant they detect a fault. They're required in areas where water is present — kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and outdoors. If your older home doesn't have GFCI protection in these areas, adding it is an important safety upgrade.
Quick test: GFCI outlets have Test and Reset buttons. Press Test — the outlet should cut power. Press Reset to restore it. If it doesn't respond, the outlet may be faulty and should be replaced.
Avoid overloading outlets
Each outlet and circuit is rated for a certain load. Plugging too many high-draw devices into one outlet (or daisy-chaining power strips) can overheat the wiring. Give large appliances their own dedicated outlets, and if you're constantly short on outlets, have more installed rather than relying on power strips.
